First Sign You Need Career Development Dying Moose Noises - Wolfgang Career Executive Coaching I attended a workshop on career development recently and the topic of employee engagement came up. One participant mentioned that her co-workers can tell when she is stressed out, overwhelmed or otherwise disengaged by a noise she makes when she sighs. She described the sigh as âthe sound of a moose dying.â This brought a lot of laughter and empathy to the room, mostly because we have all been there. In our own ways, we have all made the dying-moose sound related to our career development. Can you relate to this woman? If so, there are two steps to determining how seriously you should take these signs. First, get your hands around the size of the issue. Second, determine your steps for making a correction. Find out if there is a larger problem here The dying moose sound is her âtellâ. Itâs the symbol that something is not right and she needs to adjust. This might mean she needs a small change. She might need to meditate or deeply breathe for a few minutes, go walk around the building, play her favorite song or something else that helps relieve the feeling of stress, feeling overwhelmed or disengaged. OR, this might mean she needs a bigger change. I am not her coach. If I were, I would wonder things like: How frequently does she notice the sigh? What types of activities or interactions are causing her to feel stressed, overwhelmed or disengaged? Where does the sigh happen? Only at work, or is it something her family members notice? Is this a new feeling or has she experienced it in past jobs? What changes in her job (or her life) have contributed to the feelings? Get back on track with your career development This sigh, while humorous to others, is a sign that something needs to shift. It is a fundamental part of managing our career and keeping up with our own career development work. This individual has a level of self-awareness to know something is not right. It now requires some inner reflection and exploration to really understand what is going on and what steps need to happen to make a change. What career development steps do you need to take? Look at your answers to the questions above and drill down into the reasons behind your feelings about your job whether those are reasons you love your job or reasons you dont. Career development, on a basic level, means finding ways to move your career towards the things that make you happy. Do this a few times per year to adequately manage your career. I wish we all had such an easy âtellâ when our career felt out of alignment. We all have the âtellâ, but for some it is hidden much more. I would encourage you to regularly have a career check-in with yourself to understand what is going well and where you have challenges. You may identify some areas for change before the sound of a dying moose is ever uttered. Do you have a tell when you are overwhelmed or stressed? 4 Tips to Jump Start Your Fall Job Search Recruiting picks up in the fall. Employers are back from vacation mode. They see their end-of-year targets and if they are behind, they have to hire now to hit goal. They have three quartersâ worth of budget data, and if there is salary money still to be allocated, they have to hire now or possibly lose the headcount in the next year. So there are multiple reasons why the fall is a great time to prioritize your job search activity if youâve slacked off or gotten discouraged during the summer. Here are 4 tips to jump start your job search for the fall season: Savor the summer Yes, as people come back to the busy fall they pine for their summer. Use the after-summer glow to engender good feelings: Infuse your networking with questions about their summer activity. Circle back to people by sharing your own vacation news. If you know any working parents, send a back-to-school tips article so they know youâre thinking of their needs specifically. If there are people you tried to meet but vacations got in the way, ask again now. If there are specific company discussions you want to pick up again, mention the push to hit year-end goals and to finalize year-end headcount as an excuse to restart discussions now. Use the change of season as a reason to get in touch and a topic to talk about. Sync up your schedules School is back in session, so working parents will have two calendars to juggle â" academic and professional. Member groups that take the summer off from activities now resume meetings and events. Community service, board work, and other outside activities that slow or stop over summer get back to normal. As your job search picks up so do all of your other commitments, and this makes scheduling more complex: Put school, family, and other non-work activities on your work schedule now to avoid double-booking. Therefore, if you want to be in a new job by next year, you want to time your search to be done or at least in late stages by Thanksgiving: What companies would you like to be meeting with by Thanksgiving? Who do you know there or who do you know who can introduce you? How and when will you reach out to these people? Networking takes place over time. Reserve several weeks, if not months for this. Do you have an updated resume and LinkedIn profile to share? If not, block time to do this before you network. This means October at the latest. Do you even know what companies are of interest so you can find the relevant people and target your resume appropriately? If not, block out time to read about different companies and industries, to do some introspection about your interests and priorities, and to experiment with classes, meetups, or volunteer work â" something hands-on that will give you insight into what you enjoy. If you are still in the what-do-I-want stage, you need to get clarity before you network and before you spend time on a resume and LinkedIn profile that might not be related to your ultimate target. Block out time now â" this means September. People do get hired over the holidays but these candidates are likely already in play. If you want to be already in play by Thanksgiving, this means a September start. Start now If you have a clear sense of your target companies, you can jump to refining your marketing materials or straight to networking, if you have materials in place, donât feel like you can put off your networking activity for later â" take advantage of the extra time. You have more time to build genuine relationships. You can reach out to more people. You can experiment with different types of networking â" social media, Meetups, focusing on immediate friends and family, cold calling heads of the departments where you want to work. Even if you donât have a clear sense of what you want next, you still have time to launch a thoughtful and comprehensive job search before year-end, if you start right now. In fact, those with student loan debt would stay at a company 36 percent longer if it offered student loan repayment assistance.Millennial college graduates spend close to one-fifth of their annual salaries on student loan repayment, according toa recentreportby Citizens Bank. In fact, more Americans are burdened with student loan debt than ever before, with millennials, in particular, owing a staggering sum over $1.48 trillion spread out among about 44 million borrowers, according to Student Loan Hero. Thats$620 million more than U.S. credit card debt, as graduates today find themselves with $39,400 in student loans on average. One in six graduates owes more than his or zu sich annual incomes, and about 2.5 million Americans have student debt in excess of $100,000.Student loan debt has gotten so hefty that two-thirds of millennials arent saving for retirement, largely because student loan debt is a more pressing financial concern.Andthe American Association of University Womenfound that women typically have larger student loans than men.But companies can retain millennial talent, and especially millennial women, if they offer some loan relief.Some companies are making moves, such as the healthcare company Abbott, which is offering its employees a new student loan/401(k) program. Recently, Abbott announced the launch of a new benefit, the Freedom 2 Save program, that will help employees pay off their loans. If employees can put two percent toward paying down their student loans, Abbott will match it with a deposit into their 401(k) accounts.Other companies, like Penguin Random House, also have systems in place.As of the beginning of 2017, full-time Penguin Random House employees whove been with the publisher for at least one year are entitled to up to $1,200 per year for their student loans. Healthcare company Aetna offers tuition reimbursement and student loan repayment with an offer of $2,000 per year and a lifetime maximum of $10,000 for full-time employees, and$1,000 per year and a lifetime maximum of $5,000 for part-time employees.Adding student loan repayment assistance to benefits packages is a wise move for those looking to increase retention.
